Natural Remedies May Help with Canine Flu

A new strain of canine flu, known as H3N2, has been floating around this past flu season, with 52 cases confirmed this month in Nevada. The Animal Foundation is taking precautions to protect dogs from a highly contagious dog flu expected to hit the Las Vegas Valley. Another, older strain of canine flu that has also been infecting dogs is H3N8. This strain specifically has been present in the state since 2015.

There are different symptoms of canine flu, but some of the most common ones include:
• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Runny nose, usually yellow-green looking mucus
• Difficulty breathing
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy

When your dog starts showing symptoms, it is important to keep track of their health. Any sort of change in your dog’s health can help your vet determine which treatments will work to help you dog feel better and heal faster. While vaccines can certainly help when treating canine flu, it can be persistent and stick around for days. Many pet owners look natural remedies or home treatments to give their dog’s immune system that extra boost it needs to fight the flu.

Natural remedies

Drink plenty of water

Dogs need to stay hydrated to recover fully from a cold. Make sure your dog is drinking plenty of water! Just like humans, it is important that your dog drinks plenty of water to pass nutrients to the heart, brain, muscles and cells. Water can also help flush bacteria that may hinder your dog’s health.

Make time for extra rest

Dogs needs lots and lots of rest when feeling under the weather, just like humans, too! You can provide your pup with a cozy, warm place to sleep. Give them a nice warm blanket to sleep with, and maybe heat up the bed with a warm water bottle or a heating pad. Alternatively, if you have the money for it, you can splurge on a heated bed for your dog.

Vitamins, herbal and natural remedies

Natural antibiotics, such as colloidal silver, has strong antimicrobial (antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal) properties and is effective at strengthening a dog’s immune system. Adding essential oils to a steam vaporizer can help soothe your dog if they’re coughing. Oils such as lavender, eucalyptus and niaouli can be very effective.

Your dog’s health is very important to you, especially during flu season. Keeping track of their health is key to helping fight any illnesses your dog can contract.
