Dog Tags & The Law – What Do You Need To Know?

As a dog owner, the law in the UK states that you must ensure that your pet wears a dog collar in public which is engraved with your name and address. Of course, the most convenient way to do this is to fit an engraved tag to your dog’s collar;  something which can be picked up relatively cheaply. Failing to have your dog tagged with the correct details can result in a fine of up to £5,000 and it’s important to know that this is something which is tightly enforced and has seen many dog owners pulled up on it. As such, we decided to take a look at dog tags and the law and, in order to do so, have teamed up with Doggie Tags, a leading retailer of personal dog tags.

The law (the Control of Dogs Order 1992) states that all dogs in public places must wear a collar which displays the name and address (including postcode) of the owner. In addition to this, it is strongly suggested that the tag includes the owner’s phone number, however this isn’t legally required. It can, however, help to ensure your dog is returned home as quickly as possible should it become lost or separated from you. It’s strongly advisable that you do NOT include your dog’s name on the tag as this can cause difficulties in the rare event that your pet is stolen, given that the thief would be aware of your dog’s name and be able to attract it’s attention easily and quickly.

In terms of how to best display the required details on the tag, we’d suggest you use the following format:

In the UK, a house name or number and the postcode constitutes a full address and, as such, this is generally seen as the easiest way to meet the legal requirements while also fitting all of the information onto a small tag.

It’s also important to understand that, as of April 6th 2016, it will be legally required for ALL dogs to be fitted with a microchip. With this in mind, why not have your dog microchipped ahead of the required date, offering you the reassurance that your dog is far safer in the event it becomes lost through not only a tag (which can occasionally become lost) but also a microchip containing your details!
